IFE Activities
The work of the IFE Core Group in policy guidance is embodied in the Operational Guidance on IFE for emergency relief staff and programme managers, The IFE Core Groups work on capacity building is reflected in two training modules for orientation (Module 1) and technical support (Module 2) in IFE.
In 2006, an international strategy meeting on IFE, organised by the IFE Core Group and funded by UNICEF, IBFAN-GIFA and CARE USA, identified key constraints to implementing policy and operational guidance to protect and support infants and young children in emergencies. The IASC Nutrition Cluster subsequently funded the ENN, as coordinating agency of the IFE Core Group, to realise many of the key action points identified at this meeting.
These include update and translation of the Operational Guidance on Infant and Young Feeding in Emergencies (IFE), update of Module 2 and its translation into French and Bahasa-Indonesia, development of guides for the media and the general public on IFE, collation of field material and experiences on IFE housed in an online Resource Library on IFE, complemented by a networking facility.
The Nutrition Cluster also supported a regional workshop in Bali, Indonesia, Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies: Regional Experiences and Challenges in Achieving Optimal Early Response'. Held in March 2008, the meeting was organised by the ENN/IFE Core Group in cooperation with UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office, UNICEF South Asia Regional Office and the Ministry of Health, Indonesia. Over 100 delegates from 16 countries attended.
In 2009, the IFE Core Group collaborated with the World Alliance on Breastfeeding Action (WABA) on the celebration of World Breastfeeding Week which theme was 'Breastfeeding, a vital emergency response: are you ready?'
