Background

The Operational Guidance on IYCF-E was first produced in 2001. Version 2.0 was produced in May 2006. Version 2.1 (February 2007) is supported by an addendum in 2010 (link) regarding handling Breastmilk substitutes and is endorsed by a World Health Assembly Resolution (23.23) in 2010.  It is produced by the ENN and managed by the Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IFE) Core Group, an inter-agency collaboration concerned with the development of training materials and related policy guidance on IYCF-E. It is available in 13 languages.

Project summary

The Operational Guidance on IFE provides concise practical but mainly non-technical guidance on how to ensure appropriate infant and young child feeding in emergencies. It is a key reference document and informed Sphere Indicators on IYCF-E (Sphee 2011). is endorsed in a World Health Assembly Resolution (WHA 23.23, 2010).  It is suitable for everyone from nutrition and health workers, logisticians and programme managers to policy makers, at headquarters and field level. The translation of the Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Japanese and Chinese versions was supported by the UNICEF-led IASC Nutrition Cluster. The French translation was supported by Fondation Terre des hommes.
