Contents: This course is designed to provide health workers with the clinical and interpersonal skills needed to support mothers and their children to breastfeed optimally. It includes guides for the course director and trainers, a participant’s manual, a booklet with overhead figures, a slid book and annexes. The materials are designed to make it possible for trainers even with limited experience of teaching the subject to conduct up-to-date and effective courses.
Target audience: The course is for health workers who care for mothers and young children, this includes midwives, community health nurses, paediatric nurses, and doctors, particularly those who are working at the first level of health care. In addition obstetricians, paediatricians, nutritionists and staff of programmes such as Control of Diarrhoeal Diseases and Acute Respiratory Infections, immunization, and family planning might find the course useful, and it will help them to understand how they can support breastfeeding in their programmes.
Time for training: 5 days.
