This is a tool that allows you to calculate the benefits of breastfeeding in terms of : a) the economic value of actual and potential breastmilk production (Production) b) the effects of sub-optimal breastfeeding on health and health care costs (Health) c) the effects of sub-optimal breastfeeding on mortality (Survival) d) the child spacing effects and family planning resources saved due to breastfeeding (Fertility) e) a summary of results on the benefits of breastfeeding (Summary). Quantifying BOB is particularly important where the true value of breastfeeding is unappreciated and where appropriate policies and programs to promote and protect breastfeeding are either absent or poorly implemented. Policy reform efforts are more likely to succeed when the benefits of breastfeeding are expressed in terms that are important to policy makers, their supporters and stakeholders.
Could potentially be used to support IFE policies.
