Objectives
The objectives of the Consultation that took place in Geneva from 6 – 7 September 2004 were to:
- critically review new evidence in relation to the current WHO guidelines;
- consider if changes to the guidelines may be required as a result of the new evidence;
- consider if the guidelines for infants aged < 6 months should be modified;
- assess the guidelines in relation to care of severelymalnourished children with Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) or children of unknown status in areas where there is a high prevalence of HIV; and
- identify a research agenda for inpatient care of severely malnourished children.
Background: The WHO 1999 guidelines: Management of severe malnutrition: A manual for physicians and other senior health workers, was followed by the WHO/IMCI guidelines (2000): Management of the child with a serious infection or severe malnutrition. Guidelines for care at the first referral level in developing countries. This was followed by the Ashworth and Burgess book (2003) 'Caring for Severely Malnourished Children' based on the previous two documents. Following this book an article was published in Field Exchange 20 Pages 16-18 highlighting some differences in opinion.
In 2004 this meeting was held to look at differences, the way forward and research areas. The treatment of infants <6 months was seen as a research area. The MAMI project (details in this library) is now looking at this area.
