About the Technical Meeting on Nutrition (TMN) 2014
Background
The technical meeting on nutrition (TMN) will provide a forum to address specific technical, programming and policy issues relevant to nutrition in emergencies and high burden contexts; share and appraise key research and discuss ongoing challenges. It also aims to build consensus for improved practice, priority research, guidance and policy development. The meeting will provide time and space for individuals and groups to network with other professionals and sectors. It will also facilitate multi-sectoral nutrition connections.
An interagency steering group and advisory panel is guiding the agenda development, meeting proceedings and participants profile. We are looking forward to a broad range of professionals attending, who work on both nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive programming from UN agencies, NGOs, academics, donors and government technical staff; allied sectors such as health, agriculture, water, sanitation and hygiene and those working in transition/development programming in high burden contexts.
Specific objectives of the meeting:
a) To give participants the opportunity to present their work, highlight lessons and share experiences from cutting edge/innovative and new areas of research and programming.
b) To give participants the opportunity to identify and discuss critical gaps and unanswered questions in relation to research and programming, with peers from the wider nutrition community and related sectors.
c) To provide participants with the space to discuss how to collectively move forward in certain key technical and programmatic areas and to allow current working/steering groups in the sector to convene and allow formation of new groups, as necessary.
d) To strengthen donor and academic understanding of operational challenges both within the sector and in cross-sectoral work streams.
Organisers and Funders
The lead organiser is the ENN, supported by a Steering Committee (SC) and an Advisory Group (AG), made up from individuals representing key organisations, institutions and academia.
The meeting is being funded by OFDA, Irish Aid and contributions from UNHCR, ACF, World Vision and Concern Worldwide.
Format of the meeting
The meeting will use formal and informal approaches to present, share and discuss research, policy and programming through a combination of the following:
- Plenary presentations
- ‘Market place’ presentations
- Parallel sessions
- Panel Q & A discussions
- Technical development opportunities such as active networking and space for side meetings.
Download the agenda here.
Outcomes
The meeting will use existing tools and mechanisms, such as en-net and Field Exchange to capture and share experiences and facilitate pre- and post-meeting dialogue. We will produce a meeting report of the proceedings and a discussion paper to provide an overview of the key issues identified, with recommendations for research and policy directions and actions.
