Biofortification: An Agricultural Investment for Nutrition

Author: The Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition
Year: 2015
Resource type: Report

This policy brief lays out the technical evidence and arguments for supporting biofortification as one element of a nutrient-sensitive national agricultural research and investment strategy.

People’s deficiencies in key vitamins and minerals continue to pose a very serious constraint to human health and economic development. The Global Nutrition Report (2014) and the Kigali Declaration on Biofortified Nutritious Foods (HarvestPlus 2014a) both highlight the need for multiple complementary strategies to address key micronutritient deficiencies. Combinations of actions are needed because different populations within a country can be reached by different methods and all people need to be reached.
