Introduction to Nutrition in Emergencies- Basic Concepts; UNICEF E-learning course
This online course covers basic concepts around the humanitarian system and reform, undernutrition and response in emergencies, individual assessment, and micronutrients. It is based on key modules of the Harmonized Training Package : Resource Material for Training on Nutrition in Emergencies (the HTP)..
Course content & assessment
The course comprises 5 sections comprised of lessons and mini-lessons. Each lesson takes approximately 40 minutes to complete and each mini-lesson takes 10-15 minutes.
Module 1: International Humanitarian System and Reform (6 lessons)
Module 2: Basic concepts in Nutrition in Emergencies (6 lessons, 1 mini-lesson)
Module 3: Measuring under-nutrition in individuals (3 lessons, 4 mini-lessons)
Module 4: Micronutrients (4 lessons, 2 mini-lessons)
Module 5: Infant feeding in emergencies (7 lessons, 3 mini-lessons)
At the end of each section there is a knowledge based test comprised of 15 questions. A final emergency scenario assessment tests application of the content from all 5 sections. To successfully complete the course and receive a certificate, a pass rate of 80% must be achieved for each test and for the emergency scenario assessment.
Sections 1-4 were commissioned by UNICEF to the Emergency Nutrition Network (ENN) and was jointly developed and produced. Section 5 on infant and young child feeding in emergencies was produced in a separate initiative by the IFE Core Group in 2009/2010, led by the ENN and funded by the Global Nutrition Cluster.
