MAMI mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) tapes
Author: GOAL
Year: 2020
Resource type: Field tool
MAMI-MUAC tapes using reduced thresholds have been developed by GOAL to help identify at-risk infants under 6 months. While validated MUAC thresholds do not yet exist for this age group, it may not be possible to measure weight or length due to the need to limit physical contact during the COVID-19 pandemic. In these circumstances, MUAC provides a practical alternative as measurements can be conducted by a family member under distanced supervision by health workers.
There are two options to access MAMI-MUAC tapes:
- Contact GOAL’s supplier: Ambroplastics Ltd (UK). The estimated unit cost in November 2019 was GBP 0.565/tape based on a 3200-unit order.
- Contact an alternative supplier, ensuring that material specifications are in line with UNICEF guidance. It is advisable to request a digital proof to assure quality before printing. The following issues should also be verified: 1) The cutter guide should cut cleanly around the whole tape; if tapes are ‘popped out’ of the page there may be small protrusions on the edges that do not pull smoothly through the slits while performing measurements. 2) Check that the tape fits snugly through the slit to avoid excess side-to-side movement which can alter the measurement reading.
Please note that the artwork should not be altered, and the GOAL copyright, logo, and web link should be maintained on reproductions.
