SUN Knowledge Management

onor: UK Department for International Development (DFID) and Irish Aid
Collaborators: SUN country networks, Secretariat, & Technical Assistance Providers
ENN Project leads: Natalie Sessions and Carmel Dolan
Timeframe: 2015 - 2020

In 2015, ENN began work on a five-year project to support knowledge management (KM) in the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement. Supported by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and Irish Aid under the Technical Assistance for Nutrition (TAN) programme, ENN will contribute to the capture, dissemination and exchange of knowledge and learning within the SUN Movement. The focus of work will be on SUN countries that are defined as Fragile and Conflict Affected States (FCAS) recognising the unique challenges to scale up in these contexts and potential for sharing and learning between development and humanitarian stakeholders.

Implementing this project is an “embedded” team of Regional Knowledge Management (KM) Specialists based in SUN countries and supported by a UK based team. The regional KM team works closely with stakeholders involved in nutrition scale up in focus SUN countries supporting the documentation of experiences, challenges and innovations. ENN also engages with the SUN Movement at the global level, including through the SUN networks and SUN Secretariat.

Project Summary

The model for KM for this project is to both leverage ENNs existing publications and knowledge products to reach a large audience of practitioners and policymakers in the sector, as well as developing new tools and platforms tailored to the diverse knowledge needs of people working within the SUN Movement.
ENN's current publications, Field Exchange and Nutrition Exchange, capture field experiences and technical expertise relating to nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive programming from around the world. The network of users and contributors to these publications come from diverse backgrounds – academia, government, civil society, media and local and international development agencies - working in nutrition and related sectors including health, WASH, agriculture, food security, livelihoods, and social protection. ENN also runs en-net, an online forum serving the global nutrition community allowing users to post questions to peers in the sector and get expert technical advice. Through this project a dedicated SUN specific forum has been launched on the en-net site in order to facilitate exchange on SUN relevant questions and challenges.
ENN is also delivering new knowledge products that reach audiences in new and innovative ways. We know that the diverse nutrition community around the world is increasingly accessing and sharing information and experiences in new ways – on their phones and computers, at home, at work and on the move. In order to ensure our KM work and products are relevant, accessible and user-driven, ENN has launched a new section of its website - the Media Hub to share videos, podcasts and blog posts. These complement our written publications and provide a space to share regular reflections, interviews and updates. Through audio-visual content the Media Hub also helps to bring to life the voices and experiences of members of the global nutrition community working on the ground – providing a platform for the sharing of successes, reflection on challenges, and learning from innovations.
In 2017, the ENN also launched NutritionGroups -  an online forum designed to enable those working to improve nutrition communicate better and work together online, within closed groups. ENN is also working towards two regional knowledge sharing events during the life of the project. These will build on the in depth work that the regional team has done throughout the project and will give countries the chance to talk about their experiences around scaling up nutrition.
